Monday:

What did progressives do to help during this era? 

  • Passed the Payne-Aldrich Tariff which reduced tarrifs - Taft lowered tariffs but also raised on a lot of products 
  • Wilson's Accomplishments- Passed the Clayton Anti-Trust Act(1914) - could break up monopolies .. Labor Unions were given the right to exist - Strikes, boycotts, picketing, etc. became legal .. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) was established in 1914  -investigated companies for monopolistic  --- Most of these are still around today which make them very important in our history
  • Federal Reserve - america needed stronger banks , act of 1913 , divided the nation into 12 distracts - regional bank in each district , helped with giving out loans , "Bankers bank" - very powerful organization 
  • 17th, 18th, 19th amendments were passed during his term - direct election senators (1913) , Prohibition (1919) , Women;s votes (1920) 
  • Keating Owen Act - First federal act of fighting child labor 
  • Adamson Act - Set up an 8 hour workday 
  • African - Americans were for the most part ignored by Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson and Progressive Movement 
  • Wilson restated segregation in Washington D.C. and also started segregation in the US military
