Today in CWI we continued with the projects. Luke Eli and Max went first today. There's was on dependence on fossil fuels/pollution/alternative energy. Fossil fuels are non renewable energy source. Fossil fuels are found in deposits beneth the earth. Coal oil and natureal gasses are some examples. Over 85 percent of our energy demands are met by fossil fuels. It was formed formed many hundreds of millions of years ago. It was called the carboniferous period. 369 to 286 million years ago.fossil fuels (coal)- made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and varying amounts of suler. Three mail coal types: Anthracite, Lignite, Bitumionous. Anthracite is teh hardest and has highest carbon amount, best source of energy. Lignite is the softest and is lowest in carbon but high hydrogen and oxygen content. Bituminous is in between. fossil fuels (oil or petroleum): consist of diatoms, daitons died, buried under rock in ocean, eventually into oil. Smog and rain are examples of air pollution.Air pollution can happen inside houses too. Pollutants can be in the form of solid particles, liquid droplets, or gases. They can be Natural or man made. They can be primary or secondary. 4% of deaths a year are caused by air pollution. The main two causes of water pollution causes are sewage and fertilizers. Garbage in rivers and stream clogs these waterways. Aquatic animals die and species are eliminated by water pollution. Land pollution is the contamination of land surfaces and soil. Soil gets polluted by pesticides, herbisides, and chemicals from agriculture use and field run offs.Alternative energys are renewable and are thought to be free energy sources. Biomass energy, wind energy, solar energy, are some examples of alternative energy. Then the next group went. It was a group of Justice and Becca and their topic was deforestation. About two acres of corests are beng destroyed each second. That is 460,800 acres a day. Deforesation is used to describe the process of removing trees in forests and woodlands to convert the land into other uses. Brazil is the top country affected by deforesation. Some of the animals that are affected by deforesation are pink dolphins, pandas, tigers, monkeys, and sea lions. We should care about deforesation because we as humans have to breathe and to breath we need air which trees and plants give us. All the amials will become extinct and future generations wont be able to see these animals. Earth will be destroyed. We will never get the animals and forests back once they are gone. The U.N has launched a program that will assist nine developing countires in establishing systems to moniter, assea and report forest cover. Then we ran out of time so we will finish with their presentation tomorrow.
