Today in CWI we continued our presentaions. Max, Eli, and Luke went first today. Their presentation was about the Dependence On Fossil Fuels, Pollution, and Alternative Energy. Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy sources. They are found in deposits beneath the earth. Examples are Coal, Oil, and Natural Gases. Over 85% of our energy demands are met by Fossil Fuels. It was formed over hundereds of millions of years ago during the time called the Carboniferous Period around 369 to 286 million years ago. Coal is made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and varying amounts of sulfur. The 3 main types of coals are Anthracite, which is the hardest and has the highest amount of carbon. It is also the best source of energy. Lignite, is the softest and is the lowest in carbon, but highest in hydrogen and oxygen content. Bituminous is in between the other two. Oil consists of diatoms. They use dead diatoms which are located under rocks in the ocean. They are eventually turned into oil because of its pressure and heat. Natural Gases were first discovered 2,000-6,000 years before B.C. An examples of natural gas is Eternal Flames in Azerbaijan. Natural Gas has many uses such as: fires, heating, cooking, and many others. The first type of pollution is Air Pollution which is when the accumulation in the atmosphere of substances that, in sufficient concentrations, endanger human health or produce other measured effects on living matter and other materials. Examples are smog and acid rain. 4% of deaths a year are caused by Air Pollution. The next type of pollution is water pollution. There are two types of water pollutants: point source and nonpoint source. Point sources are when two substances are directly put in water. Non-point sources are when substances are put indirectly through enviromental change. The two main causes of water are sewage and fertillizers. Garbage in rivers and streams clog many waterways. Aquatic animals die and species are eliminated by water pollution. Another form of pollution is Land Pollution which is the contamination of land surface and soil. Land pollution includes visible litter and waste along with the soil itself being polluted. Soil gets polluted by pesticides, herbicides, and chemicals from agriculture use and field run offs. Some examples of soild wastes that are not biodegradable (objects that do not het broken down through inorganic or organic processes) are: paper, plastic containers. bottles, cans, and even used car parts. Alternative energy is a way to prevent pollution. It refers to energy sources that have no undesired consequence for example, fossil fuels, or nuclear energy. Alternative energy sources are renewable and are thought to be "free" energy sources. Examples are: biomass energy, wind energy, solar energy, geothermal energy, and hydroelectric energy sources.Justice and Becca did theirs on Deforestation. About two arcres of forests are being destroyed each second. thats 460,800 acres a day! Deforestation is used to describe the process of removing trees in forests and woodlands to convert the land into other uses. Countries affected by this are: Brazil they lost 8,915 sq. miles. Indonesia has lost 5,065 sq miles. Sudan has lost 3,702 sq. miles. and many others. Animals affected are pink Dolphines, Pandas, Tigers, Monkets, Hornbills, Jaguar, Cheetah, Leopard, Cougar, Brown Bear, and many many more. We need to care about deforestation because we need oxygen inorder to breathe and trees give off oxygen, We are killing many animals. A lot of medicins come from rain forests so if we destroy all of the rainforests there will be cures to diseases and sicknesses that will not be discovered. The UN has launched a program called UN-REDD it will asist nine developing countries in establishing systems to moniter gases,
