Regulations being drafted in Saudi Arabia

Laws in Iraq forbidding 9 year old to get married- is often overlooked

Where does it happen-

It happens the most in India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Brazil, Ethiopia, etc.

Why does it happen?'

It's a traditional practice and straying from this tradition can make the family an outcast

If a family is in poverty they will sell their daughters to reduce family expenses and to get compensation for daughter

Sometimes to ensure safety so daughter doesn't get sexually assaulted

Statistics-

More than 30% of today's women were married before 18

An additional 12 billion underage girls will be married by 2050

Almost half of the girls in India are child brides

15 million girls are married underage every year (28 girls every minute, 39,00 every day)

The longer a girls stays in school, less likely to be married before age of 18

An additional year of schooling raises a girl's income by 15-20%

Stillbirths and newborn deaths are 50% more likely to happen in child births compared to woman who give birth

Child marriage traps girls and their families in a cycle of poverty

Girls who are married before 18 are more likely to experience domestic abuse

Child marriage could be considered slavery

Female Genital Mutilation-

1/20 women world wide have gone removal of external female genitalia- part of culture

Four types- cutting, pricking, piercing, scraping, burning, sewing; no asastasia

Covered with ash, earth, sap, and leaves

Over 140 million girls and women worldwide have undergone FGM (female genital mutilation)

Takes a place a lot if African countries

Why?

Ensures virginity and men are willing to marry and pay more money for girl

Symbolizes that girl has become a women- prepares a girl for marriage

Cause extreme pain, severe bleeding, infection, PTSD

Big part of many culture

Affects 23% of Yemen's female population

Keeps girls virgins

Wednesday- Today we took our Europe class quiz over Southern Europe. We got 10/10!

History of Thanksgiving- The first Thanksgiving was in 1621 when the Pilgrims invited Native Americans to have dinner with them. It didn't become a national Holiday until 200 years until Lincoln's presidency in `863. There was no turkey, pie, etc. In 1939 Thanksgiving was moved up a week so retailers could get more money, but then FDR fixed it and set it back to the regular week. 

Radical Islam- (Spencer, Eli, Oscar)

Islam- based on submitting to the will of god. Believe that is Jesus and Moses but doesn't think Jesus is the messiah. Belives in a single god 'Allah' and the Quaran.

Facts-

Indonesia has the largest Muslim population

And largest religion (fastest growing)

- About 1.6 billion Muslims (only 7-10% are radical; 160,000 are radical) (2.6 million Americans)

Islamism-

It's an ideology- not a religion. Changes government and society so it goes with laws by Islam. They believe that outside influence should be left out. 

ISIS and Al queda are the main radical groups.
