Puerto Rico-

Puerto Ricans were granted US citizenship in 1917
Do not have the same rights as other US citizens
In 2012, Puerto Rico voted for statehood

Cuba-

1898- Spain gives US control of Cuba
1902- We gave Cuba freedom
Teller amendment- Gave Cuba independence
US could intervene militarily to preserve stability
US got Guantanamo Bay, an important naval base
Cuba Today
- One of the 5 communist countries
- Fidel Castro
  - Started communism in Cuba
  - Didn't want Americans in Cuba
  - Allies with the Soviet Russia
- We didn't trade with Cuba

Philippines-

McKinley wanted to:

Philippine-American War broke out after the war with Spain

- Some believe US committed genocide

1946- Philippines are given independence

China-

  - Didn't want US to take control over Panama
- What happens?
  - Panama revolts
  - Panama declares independence from Colombia
- 5,600 workers die of disease

- Dangerous

  - US would be the police officer between Latin America and Europe
