US Control of Puerto RicoForaker Act set up civilian government. This withdrew the US troops from Puerto Rico. The president of the US would elect the upper house of the government and the lower house would be elected by the people. This got changed to the Organic ActJones Act gave Puerto Rico people United States citizenship. As time gave on we gave Puerto Ricans more freedom and stuff... today they are called a US Commonwealth. The are US citizens, they can move freely between the United States and Puerto Rico. The only difference of them is that are not allowed to vote for the president of the united states. There are people that want to become a state, some that want independence, but the majority of people want Puerto Rico to remain a commonwealth.US Control of CubaBefore we went to war with the spanish the teller ammendment guarenteed Cuban indepepndence after tha tspanish american war. After the spanish american war the US stayed in Cuba and helped out with aid. The Cubans were not welcoming of US because they didn't want us to take them over and they wanted us out. Once they accepted us there we started to do positive things. Cuba made a constitution that said nothing about the US and Cuba so we wrote the Platt Ammendment that said we are the only counrty that can have Cuban relations and Cuba was not happy. We said we would remove troops once they added this to this their constitution. The four parts of the ammendment said Cuba cannot make treaties with other countries, we can intervein, Cuba cannot go into debt, and Americans could buy Cuban land and we could have military bases there. They accepted the ammendment just so we would get out. Cuba became basically a free country with strings attatched that the United States controlling it.US Control of PhillipinesRight after Cuba the Phillipines had gotten their independence. After the war the Phillipines were hoping that we would give them independence right away just like we did with Cuba. The Teller Ammendment said nothing about the Phillipines. The Phillipine people realized that we were not going to give them independence. Our aly at the time of the war was Amelio Augwanaldo and after the war when they realized we were not going to give them independence they went to a non declared wimpy war. The vast majority of the US troops fighting the Fillipeans were black and halfway in some decided they were being hypocritical and joined the Phillipean side. We spent more money keeping the Phillipeans than we did buying it. More troops died keeping the Phillipeans than ones that died during the Spanish American War. We were the bad guys. ): No good. There were a lot of people that thought the war was wrong in America.Open-door Policy in ChinaAmerica was looking for a country to trade with, China had been weekend by war and other countries had started to set up settlements on the coast. John Hay was the secretary of state at the time issued the open door notes which was a series of policy statements and this gave an open door to trade with America with no restrictions. This policy allows free trade in China with other countries. It allowed all countries equal trading with China and it gave Chinese Indepepndece. It remained intact for decades. The Boxer RebellionThe boxers were the broke society that was for getting rid of Europeans in China. They were called boxers because most of them practiced martial arts.. basically ninjas. Although China had independence many of the larger societies were still ruled by the Europeans. This killed around twothousand american soliders and they killed many foreigners and missionaries around them. People were sent from places to take over the boxers. The boxers wanted China only for the Chinese, so they killed anyone that wasn't. All the main countries could have taken over China but because of the open door policy that could not happen. We only stepped in because we did not want to be out of the loop, we basically saved China's butt.
