Protecting Social Welfare -- Helping the poor 

  • Set up settlement houses for poor
  • Opened libraries
  • Sponsored education classes
  • Opened swimming pools
  • Set up soup kitchens
  • Slum brigades -- tech immigrants 

Promoting Moral Improvement - Carrie Nation 

  • 18th amendment to the US Constitution 
  • Banned Alcohol
  • Was aloud for medicine and in church 
  • Women Suffrage - they were being impacted the most from husbands drinking 

Creating Economic Reform:

  • Regulation of Business - Sherman Act (To break up monopolies)
  • Child labor laws were passed 
  • Hours reduced 
  • Workmen's compensation - pay day

Muckraker:

  • Investigative journalist
  • Expose the problems investigated to public
  • The Jungle-meatpacking was a big exposed problem 
  • Started the whole inspecting that we have today on things 

Reforming Elections:

*What did they do to make our country more Democratic*

  • Secret ballot
  • direct primary
  • Initiative - a bill originated by the people rather than lawmakers 
  • Referendum - when voters accept or reject the initiative (bill)
  • Recall - enabled voters to remove public officials from elected positions 
  • 17th and 19th Amendments - (17th)direct election of US senators  - (19th)the right to vote to women
