What did the progressives do to make the workplace safer?They set working hours so that people weren't over tired and couldn't work efficiently. 1970, Ocea is an orgonization the can go in and shut down any business or whatever if the qualities of them weren't very good. If we got hurt on the job today, the worker would still get paid until they are already to go back to work.2. What did the progressives do to help end or reduce child labor?Women and workers went on strike. Ketgen Owen did not allow states to transport goods made by childeren out of the state.3. What is prohibition?The ban on alcohol. Why did people want prohibition to come about? They thought that alcohol was the problem to all political issues. What tactics were used to bring about prohibition?The 18th admendment banned alcohol abuse.4. What did progressives do to help workers reduce the number of hours they had to work?5. What did progressives do to make our country more democratic?6. What is women’s suffrage? What approaches did women use to gain the right to vote?Women were the biggie of the household. Women were angry because african american males and other minorities were able to vote, and blacks got to vote and most women got upset because now they thought that now they were under blacks.7. What did progressives do to bring about better wages for workers?8. What is segregation? What did progressives do to help African Americans?9. What did the progressives do to make food and drugs safer for the people of the United States?The food and drug act was to make sure that they were labeled correctly and had the correct content. The meat inspection was forced to do to make the human health was well. Even if the meat was inspected, they still had some warnings on them. The orgonization that oversees all of the food and drug health things was the FDA. Cocane and other addicting drugs was in most of the medicine that people were taking. The government eventually banned those kinds of drugs from the medicines.10. What did progressives (TR) do to help conserve land and resources in our country?People were taking land that they would never use and they would overgraze in some of the prairies and stuff. Arbor Day was invented in Nebraska. The Timber Cultur Act in 1873, the congress passed and act to encourage the growth of timber on western prairies. This granted settlers 160 acre plots if the cultivated trees on 1/4 the land for 10 something. 1875; American forestry association is founded. Congress passes an act which forbids any unauthorized cutting or damaging any sort of trees or plants on government land.11. What did progressives do to regulate businesses in the United States?Laze fare; governments didn't do anything to regulate government.12. What were the progressive’s philosophy on tariffs? Describe the Federal Reserve System.A tariff is a tax on imported goods. A high tariffs benefits the rich. Iow benefits the common people.13. Describe the impact aid organizations had on our country. The underwood tariff was the first tariff to signifintally changed it. Income tax was created. The more you make, the more you pay back to the government. The Federal Reserve System was basically a banker's bank. Everytime there was a panick, people would take the money out. People would over draw the bank and then the bank would close. The Fed. Res. Act was theThey had the social gospel and that basicaly said that they should help the needy and them selves. They were basicaly christian churches together. Some of the things today are places like the YMCA and the salvation army. Salvation army is a christian group and was created by William Booth and the mission was to create a church where poor people wouldn't worry about their appearence.14. What is socialism? How was it started in the United States?It is the government having complete control over the businesses. How the economies are run. Someone thought that people should get paid by their talent and how hard you worked. Before the progressive era, people weren't doing so well. Eugine B. One of the canidates to something and beleived that everyone should be equal. Later he was a part of the solcialist labor party and was created in 1876 and is still around today.15. What/who were muckrakers and what impact did they have on our country?It is a american jounalist that tries to create corrouption among bussinises and government to the public. Ida Tarbell attacked oil companies; especially the bigger oil companies like John D. Rockefeller. Lincoln Steffens focused on what the government was doing wrong. Upton Cinclair wrote the book, the Jungle, disscussing things that went into the meat and food that ate. Big impacts.16. What did businesses do to bring better efficiency to their business?Mass productions grew because of assemly lines. instead of one person making this whole thing that would take longer than if several people put on different peices.17. Describe the major social changes that affected women during the Progressive Era.The middle and upper class women stayed and worked in the house, but the poor women had to do much more things like working in the feilds with plows and other things.18. What did local government do to reform itself during the Progressive Era?The city manager and city council. Take the problems and ideas and other things from one person and give it to several people to worry about.Carie Nation was a woman on the temperence thing and she would go into bars andsing at things with an hatchet. She was very weird and she would get arrested.Parents would encourage children to work to make some extra money. Bosses liked to hier kids because it was cheaper and the were littler to fit into smaller areas.Workman's compensation is when you would get paid when you were on leave because you were hurt on the job. Death benefits would be when you died on the job, the spouce or relative would get paid.The government used Laze Fair. It is when the government keeps hands off of businesses.Teddy Roodsabelt used the "bully pulpit" to influence media and help pass laws. He was also the trustbuster. Helped settle the 1902 coal strike in which nimers got better pay and a nine hour workday. Passed the Elkin's Act which got rid of rebates and the Hepburn Act gave railroads reasons to be equal. Big time conservationist.sixteenth amendment was ratified in 1913 allowing for a graduated income tax.Taft was not like bacause he got rid of some of the acts that roosavelt had created. Republican Party Split. Progressive republican voted for roosavelt. 17th, 18th, and 19th amendments were passed during his term. Direct election of senetors. prohibition. Women's vote. They thought that if the land was sold low enough that both the US and Great Britain and then there would be a war against the two of them. GB wasn't really interested in Alaska and Seward was the person who bought.
