TOO MANY CUPCAKESSo today when I got to class Mr. Bruns was in the middle of lecturing on something. What I'm getting out of this is that he is talking about how the United States were isolationists until the late 1800's. The reasons we stayed isolationists is because we wanted to avoid foreign wars, we had a weak army and a weak nave, we were in the middle of building up the united states, we had slavery issues and reconsttuction to work with after the civil war, at the time the world was not flat because of the lack of technology at the time and we were surrounded by the two oceans keeping us geographically isolated, we had "the west" to settle, we had vast natural resources here in the united states so there was no reason to be involved with the other countries, and we wanted to follow President Washington's advice to "stay out of foreign wars and alliances.Aquiring Alaska....Arounf the civil war, people realized that we needed to expand the US because the west had now been settled and people started to freak out because there was no more manifest destiny. People were trying to look for a way to expand so in 1867 Russia was going to give up the area of Alaska. The two biggest contenders were Britain and America, they considered Britain because they were in control of Canada but they were having conflicts with them so William Seward who was Secretary of State for the United States was talking to the Russian Prime Minister and he wanted America to byt Alaska for 2 cents per acre but there was trouble with the house of representatives giving funding because they thought it would be a wasteful purchase because it was so cold but eventually the funding was given and they began to find resources there. In 1959 Alaska became a state.Aquiring Hawaii...James Cook found Hawaii while he was searching with the Northwest Passage. After we found Hawaii people began to move there for religious reasons, and after that people wanted Hawaii because of the sugar plantations. In 1875 there was a deal made between the united states and Hawaii allowing Hawaii to import sugar for free into America. Eventually the US put the tarriff back on the sugar which ticked off the American Sugar Plantation owners in Hawaii so Hawaii just wanted to become a US territory. As time went on the sugar cane owners basically owned Hawaii. It became a law that the only people who could vote in Hawaii were the people who owned land in Hawaii which were basically just white americans. Rich plantation owners in that area called the marines to take over Hawaii and then something hapened with really wierd names and so Hawaii was given back to Queen Kafioiogneijngiasf. She decided that Hawaii needed to be made only for Hawaiians, when McKinly was elected he annexed Hawaii but Queen Ksodgsjnhfjiasfn did now was to go to war so she just gave Hawaii to the United States. By the way in 1887 we convinved Hawaii to let us build a naval base there and eventually it was made to be Pearl Harbor.Spanish American WarControl of Puerto RicoThese topics will start tomorrow.

  • Touche.

    Well done Erin!!
  • Obviously it was Josh's fault for making his presentation boring enough for me to only pay attention to a few mis-interpreted words.
  • Now who's fault is that??
  • I wasn't listening to the presentation Erin!!!! All I heard was "surfboards" and "control"
