Domestic Policy vs Foreign Policy

Key Terms

Diplomacy- Making a deal within two countries peacefully

Imperialism- Using power to get what you want

Militarism- the belief of a government that a country should maintain a strong military and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend

Nationalism- Having strong pride in your country

Sphere of influence- One country has a lot of control or influence over a larger area

Protectorate-where a country is protected or controlled by another country

Arbitration (our group) - Settlement of dispute over 3rd party

Ratified the 17th amendment

Federal Trade Act-

Promoted consumer protection from false advertisements

Elimination and prevention of monopolies

Underwood Tariff Act- Taxes on imports and exports

Reduced tariff on imported goods

Federal Reserve System-

Established 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks

authorized the creation of the federal reserve note

created a degree of financial stability

Nations central banking system

Clayton Antitrust Act-

Strengthened Sherman Antitrust Act 

Creating monopoly if prohibiting corporations

Federal Farm Loan Act-

Loan to the farmers

Allow small farmers to be competitive with larger businesses

so established farm loan banks for farmers who are members of the farm loan association

Labor unions and farm organizations had right to exist and no antitrust laws

Strikes, peaceful picketing, and boycotts to become legal. 

Keating-Owen Act

Regulate youth labor

Shipment for goods and service by laborers under the age of 14 in a factory

Shop or cannery under the age of 16 in a mine

Adamson Act- 

established 8 hour work day

additional pay for overtime work

was passed in 1916 to avoid strikes

-The US did not intervene in foreign affairs, especially Europe's

-The US acted alone in foreign affairs as compared to working with other nations

-The US waited for events to occur and then acted accordingly

-Statement to Europe to "not come back" to the central/south Americas because we are the sphere of influence (western hemisphere)

Why did the US and other countries look to imperialism?

Power/resources/military power/naval bases/$$/belief in cultural superiority (white man's burden)
