  • Good:
    • trusts
    • our nation as a whole

  • Bad:
    • made poor decisions
    • consolidated not expanded
    • angered conservationists

  • Lawyer then Secretary of War
  • After presidency, professor at Yale University
  • Only president to ever serve as Chief Justice

-Payne-Aldrich Tariff

  • Payne= lower rates (house)
  • Aldrich= increased rates (senate)
  • Taft betrayal
  • reduced some tariffs but raised other tariffs
  • rich people like high tariffs
  • lower tariffs benefit consumers

  • Passed Clayton Anti-Trust Act (1914)

  • Labor Unions were given the right to exist
  • Strikes, boycotts, picketing, etc, became legal
  • Federal Trade Commission*********
    • established in 1914
    • investigated companies for monopolistic practices
  • America needs stronger banks*****
  • Federal Reserve Act of 1913
  • Divided the nation into 12 districts--> regional central bank in each district
  • "Bankers Bank"
  • Federal Reserve banks could issue new paper money in emergency situations
    • Also, helped with giving out loan $$
    • Banks within the system helped others from closing due to lack of money
    • Controls the US money supply and the availability of credit in the country
    • One of president Wilson's most enduring achievements
    • We use this same system today as the basis of the nation's banking system

  • Nationalism- patriotic feeling, principles, or efforts
  • Protectorate- one country is protected and/or controlled by another country
  • Imperialism- a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force
  • Diplomacy- the profession, activity, or skill of managing international relations, typically by a country's representatives abroad
  • Militarism- the belief or desire of a government or people that a country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests
  • Sphere of Influence- a country or area in which another country has power to affect developments although it has no formal authority
  • Arbitration- the use of an arbitrator to settle a dispute

  • Non-interventionist
    • US stayed out of foreign affairs, especially Europe's
  • Isolationist
    • US after alone in foreign affairs as compared to working with other nations
  • Passive and reactive
    • US waited for events to occur then acted accordingly
  • Weak army and navy
