14. What is socialism? And how did it get started in the United States?Socialism- came to america from the German immigrants around the mid-1800's. Socialism-government runs the businesses in order make it more equal for everyone.Eugene V. Debbs ran for president five times, he was a socialist. He even ran for president while in prison, campaigning from his jail cell. Socialists despised capitalists. Most socialists share the view that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital and derives its wealth through exploitation, creates an unequal society, does not provide equal opportunities for everyone to maximise their potentialities and does not utilise technology and resources to their maximum potential nor in the interests of the public. Socialists wanted to make things equal for everybody, and this idea was very attractive to the middle and to the lower classes.Socialists were extreme progressives.-Ian Odell15. What/who were muckrakers? And what impact did they have on our country? The muckrakers were people the exposed issues. The muchrakers today are more today called investigative journalists. The term was first used by Theodore Roosevelt, it came from a book called Pilgrims Progress. Some muckrakers were Lincoln Steffens, who wrote about Boss Tweed, Ida Tarbell who wrote about the manipulation of trusts, and Upton Sinclair who published The Jungle. There are still muckrakers today.Muckrakers expose a lot of things in society and make it to puch acts against our country's flaws.-Brandon Roberts17, Describe the major social changes the effected women during the progressive era?Before- women didn't really work. single poor women worked long hours, married women stayed home to raise children and do housework.During- 14th ammendment- women could vote. They began to make clubs and groups for women's social changes.
