2nd Group -

Civil War :

  • Between April 12, 1861 - May 9, 1865
  • Was known as "War Between the States"
  • 23 Union States
  • 4 Border States
  • 11 Confederate States
  • First Battle was in Fort Sumter, South Carolina
  • Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania was the bloodiest battle
  • Robert E. Lee was one of the most talented and successful generals of the war
  • One of the most tragic wars in American History but it also reunited the nation

Revolutionary War :

  • Between April 19, 1775 - September 3, 1783
  • Was fought between Great Britain and the Original 13 Colonies
  • Major Events were The Boston Tea Party, The Boston Massacre (sparked the war), The Declaration of Independence, & Paul Revere's Ride 
  • George Washington lost more battles than he won
  • Ben Franklin wrote drafts for the DOI

Louisiana Purchase :

  • Land Deal Between US and France
  • Napoleon offered an estimated 827,000 square miles for $15 million
  • Territory stretched from Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains

Industrial Revolution :

  • Began in Britain in late 1700s and spread to the US in the 1800s
  • Many modern inventions, jobs, and transportation were created
  • The population went from agricultural to industrial
  • Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin
  • Elias Howe invented the Sewing Machine
  • James Watt improved the steam engine
  • Changed Concept of Work
  • Work conditions were bad
  • Air and water was polluted

America is Discovered :

  • Christopher Columbus "discovered" America in 1492
  • America was named Amerigo Vespucci
  • Spread of Diseases
  • Population Decrease/Death

3rd Group -

Age of Exploration :

  • John Cabot claimed land for King Henry VII in 1497
  • Amerigo Vespucci traveled within 400 miles of tip of South America
  • Led to colonization

Age of Colonization :

  • People from Europe traveled to America to colonize
  • Established "New World"
  • Really Diverse
  • Roanoke (1585 - 1590) was a forgotten colony.
  • Jamestown was the 1st permanent settlement in 1607
  • Leader of Jamestown was John Smith
  • Start of America

Revolutionary War :

  • Fight Against British
  • Freedom for People
  • Articles of Confederation
  • Boston Tea Party (Dec. 16, 1773)
  • Made us an independent country

Louisiana Purchase :

  • April 3. 1803
