Nixon's visit to china happened in 1972, the visit made China and the US's relationship a little bit more normal then it originally was. The visit was the very first time any US leader had gone to China, otherwise known as the peoples republic of China. During this time China despised the US.
In preparation for the visit Nixon's administration sent National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger in July to China, to lay the ground work to Nixon's visit. From February 21st to the 28th 1972, Nixon went to Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai. As soon as he arrived in the Capital he was summoned to speak with Mao Zedong.
It was said during the meetings with government officials of China that the US would pull it's troops out of Taiwan. As a result the US proclaimed that there was only one China, rather then Taiwan and China.
I believe that this meeting in China and with China officials was a huge stepping stone for developing relations between communism and the normal US life. It also cleared things up about the problems with Taiwan.
