My Assigned (Free Choice) Blog of the Week

The story that I chose to "blog" about is really sad. Over in London, England, there once was a small boy. Said boy was only 13 months old. He died. Now to make this story sadder, it's true. Even more saddening is the fact that i'm going to spill the details. This young lad's parents are separated. They got in a large argument, with the father going against the mother and the hospital. The boy had a certain genetic condition known as congenital myasthenic syndrome. Basically, the kid couldn't breath on his own. Every few hours his lungs would fill with fluid, and that's basically drowning. So as you can surely guess, the kid was probably suffering. This kid was never named in the story, so that's why I'm not giving that detail. Back to the story. The boy wasn't able to breathe very well, as you can imagine, so he had a machine to help him. Here comes the sad part. The mother (aided by the hospital), thought that her child's suffering was too much for him and that it would only get worse. She wanted his ventilator switched off. The father, on the other hand, wanted the child to remain alive because he could recognize his parents, and he was able to play, and all that. Finally, after a long battle, the father sadly gave in. He agreed to have his child's ventilator switched off, and the kid died. It's very sad, but I can see both sides of this. The father loved his son and didn't want him to die, just like most parents. I'm not saying that the mother didn't love her son, but she sympathized with him, as he suffered a lot. I would never be able to pick a side for this, as I agree with, but also disagree with both sides.
