“Band of Brothers” 12 part series
Part 1 Currahee
101st Airborne Easy Company is 2 years from dropping into Germany. They are in their training stages of becoming part of the Airborne. Currahee is the mountain that they hike up and down for training and exercises. They have the best performance record out of the nine companies. Captain Sobal is their leading and commanding officer. Lieutenant Winters is second in command for the company. They train in parachute jumps and combat situations. They are being shipped to England to invade Europe. In Europe they also train and have combat situations. Captain Sobal gets uneasy in the practice combat situations. His men that he commands wanted him to be removed from his position as leader. He was reassigned to a training school for soldiers. Lieutenant Winters finds out that they are going to be deploying to Normandy. After 2 years of training they finally get to be able to jump. On June 5, 1944, was the day they deployed into the battle in Normandy, D Day.
Part 2 Day of Days
The 101st Airborne is flying over to deploy into Normandy. When they jumped Lieutenant Withers got separated from his company and quickly found some of his men. His first objective was to find out where they were. They were four hours away from their designated landing zone. With some of his men, and followed a railroad to where they came across German forces crossing through an underpass and one of his men opened fire without following orders. When they get to the regrouping 90% of the company is unaccounted for. The head Lieutenant was not present so Lieutenant Withers was put in charge of Easy Company. Their first objectives are to destroy 2-4 guns (heavy artillery) firing on the soldiers deploying on the beach. After successfully destroying all 3 guns they got back to the HQ and then returned to the battlefield with armored tanks. Lieutenant Winters lost one soldier while destroying the guns but gained a map that had every gun in Normandy on it. Lt. Winters was awarded The Distinguished Service Cross for his duties on that day for destroying the German guns at Brecourt Manor. Their tactics on taking the guns were commemorated and are still used by the military when targeting a fixed position.
