Is there technology that your tongue can control? If you’re blind or immobile there’s new technology on the horizon that may improve your life. The tongue has a lot of nerves and isn’t connected to the spinal cord like other muscles. However it’s very complex, and this summer when doctors in Spain were able to do facial reconstruction surgery on a man including fixing his tongue it was a big deal. Matching up all the right nerves with each other is very hard since in one nerves there can the hundreds of other fibers.Scientist came up with an invention that, with using their tongues, immobile people can control a wheel chair with their tongues. There’s a small magnet that goes on the tongue and my touching certain teeth the chair will move. The device knows the difference between a voluntary and involuntary movement though, so it wouldn’t move by accident. Not all research is done yet but I think it’s an amazing leap in technology and they think it should be ready in 2010.
There’s another invention that would allow blind people to see in a way. There’s a device on your tongue and it’s hooked up to a digital camera which paints the movements that you take in that room. The camera would make small stimulations on the tongue allowing the person to “see”. This again is amazing and they’re hoping to get it available within the next year. These advances in technology are just amazing. Giving a blind person the ability to see in a way or making somebody with spinal cord problems able to become mobile is outstanding. It’s crazy to think about these things and how people are able to come upon the conclusions, but when they do the world becomes better.-Breann Lehr
