Today Mr. Bruns finished his presentations.
-The Battle of the Atlantic was basically are we going to be able to get ships with supplies across the Atlantic or were they going to be sunk? The Axis powers had radio and that is how they talked with their u-boats and we tried to intercept those messages. We would travel in a convoy. We would go in large number so the Germans couldn’t sink all of them. We also tried to build faster ships to out run them.
-We had a lot of intelligence. We had codes and radar and the enigma machine and the bombe.
-Hunter-killers were ships and airplanes that went specifically for u-boats. They would have explosives that would go underwater and explode.
-Operation Barbarosa-
-This was the greatest land war in recorded history. The German front was 995 miles long and there was another 620 miles along the Finnish border. There was a lot of terrain and swamp and forest. There were a lot of people that died. At first it look like Germany was going to win, but then things happened. They were attacking the Soviet Union. They wanted to do it quickly because if it was prolonged they didn’t think they would be able to win. They had three army groups going to Leningrad, Moscow, and Stalingrad. He thought that if he would control all those cities he would be able to win.
-Battle of Stalingrad Hitler needed the Soviet oil that was in the mountains. Before the Soviets were able to beat them in Stalingrad 90% of the city was controlled by Germans. But then the winter set in and they were able to beat them. Stalingrad was demolished. Like, there was nothing left. Germany never got to Moscow. They got close but quite got there.
-Battle of Leningrad.
People were starving to death. Germans took over the railroads and cut them off from Russia and the world. The only way they could get supplies was dropped from the air.
-Italy
-People thought it was going to be very easy to defeat, but it wasn’t. The Germans had complete control of the mountains and that was the tough part. The Tuskegee Airmen was a group of black men that would fly airplanes.
-Dwight. D. Eisenhower
-He was very powerful. He was kind of in control of D-Day. They took a lot of pictures. D-day was supposed to be two days before, but because of bad weather they went on June 6th. The German wall was very strong and they would just shoot all the people.
-Battle of Bulge
-Hitler had one last attack plan and that was the battle of Bulge. Hitler thought that if they were able to force us into the sea then he would win. It worked at first but then we started pushing back. The other generals thought it was a stupid idea and they were right. It was very snowy and cold. Over a million men were involved in the battle. The Malmedy Massacre was where there were a lot of soldiers that were held hostage and then they were all killed. Well, we kept pushing into Germany. Hitler married his girlfriend and then he shot himself in the head and his girlfriend drank some poison. He ordered his bodies to be burned. They killed their dog to.
-VE day
That was when Germany surrendered in 1945. There was a big celebration.
FDR died of a cerebral hemorrhage. It was where his brain was bleeding. He died like a month before Germany surrendered.
Japan invaded Manchuria for resources. They invaded the rest of China and they do pretty well. Then they invade French indo China and then the U.S. stopped trading with them. Then they attacked Pearl Harbor. They do very well for themselves over the next year. On December 7th, they also bombed the Philippines.
