We reviewed Japan a little because nobody really knows anything about them. They outlawed war and they seemed great and peaceful. Then the great depression set in. Japan didn’t have a lot of resources so they had to trade. We had high tariffs so they couldn’t trade with us. The military then decided to invade to get resources. They invaded China. Then this Tojo guy became leader because he wanted war with the U.S. They attacked us to get us to trade with them. They were never going to take us over, but they wanted to trade with us.
Then we kind of just sat here for a long time.
Then we started presentations with the U.S.
1. How did the Treaty of Versailles impact them?
-They didn’t actually sign the Treaty of Versailles because they believed in isolationism.
2. What type(s) of government did this country have in the interwar years(1919-1938)?
-They had a democracy where people elect their president and representative.
3. How did their leader, that led them throughout WWII, come to power?
-FDR was elected in 1932. He was elected 4 times and he was the Commander in Chief for the army and navy.
4. How did this leader change their country (for the better and worse) prior to WWII?
-He got us out of the depression with the New Deal. He made a bunch of organizations so people could get jobs and get out of the great depression.
5. What were the goals of the leader?
-He went to the Yalta conference. He wanted to separate Germany into 4 zones so they wouldn’t spread and take over the world. The Atlantic Charter started in 1941. They were discussing war, even though we weren’t in the war yet. It was saying that we weren’t going to make peace with Germany and Hitler until he stopped with the Jews.
6. What was the military strategy of this country in the inter-war years (1919-1938)?
-They wanted to attack by the air because they wanted to kill quickly. They wanted naval bases so they could attack closer. They wanted to focus on defeating Germany first and making sure they didn’t spread and attack more countries. Island Hopping was our strategy, we would go from island to island and try to take out Japan.
7. What role did they play in WWII?
-We provided a lot of weapons and resources. We were focused totally on taking out Germany and we were making nuclear weapons. We made so much stuff for all of our allies that the axis powers couldn’t keep up. This is mainly why the allied powers won.
8. Who were their allies in WWII?
-They were the Allied Powers. Great Britain, Soviet Union, and the U.S. made up the big 3 and we were the main alliances.
9. How did WWII impact/effect the country?
-Baby boomer! Ha. We got out of the Great Depression because of all the jobs. The economy grew rapidly and we became a super power of the world. The population grew because of all the babies that people were having. 50 million people died and 300,000 were Americans. The cold war was beginning between the Soviet Union and the U.S.
