Today in U.S. History we went over our blog topics...1. What did the progressive's do to make the workplace safer? They gave the companies a list of things they could do to make people more safer while working, like guardrails so the workers wouldnt fall into the machines or anything else that they could possibly fall into and ear muffs to protect their hearing. Worker's Comensations was a big part of it. That was when a worker got injured on the job and the place they worked for would pay for their injury. Osha started in 1970. It's a government organization who goes around to businesses and such and makes sure the workers are safe in their enviroment. If they aren't they can be shut down. National Consumers League they tried to make sure factories were being safe.2. What did the progressives do to help end or reduce child labor?Child labor was very common, and factories wanted to hire children because they could do things adults couldnt do. They also wouldnt talk back and could be paid very little amounts. Families wanted their kids to work so they could help support their own family. The Kaeting-Owens Act was in 1916, it prohibited states from trading products to different states that were made by young children. By 1920, basically every state had ended or reduced child labor.3. What is prohibition? Why did people want prohibition to come about? What tactics were used to bring about prohibition?Prohibition is the banning of something, in this case.. alcohol. People wanted prohibition to come about because there weren't really any laws for alcohol. People would get drunk and be about the streets and what not and people just wanted to end public intoxication at first. This drunkingness led to gambling, prostitution, beating their wives and such. Women and churches were the biggest ones who wanted prohibition. Carrie A. Nation was an older lady, who was a very large woman. She went into bars and would yell at drunk people and would destroy bars with a hatchet. She disliked tobaco, alcohol and finely dressed woman. She was arrested over 30 times for her "hatchetations". They would make posters and public announcements talking about how mad drinking was and they would find alcoholic things and destroy them. After the Civil War more states were banning alcohol untill later the 8th ammendment banned all alcohol in all states. During this time the prohibitionist realized their idea wasnt working because people were still getting alcohol and were making their own. It made alcohol completely illegal and arrested anyone who had in, except for church and medical reasons. Immediatly after every state allowed alcohol the crime rates went down. People were let out of prison. Some states kept the prohibition for about 30 more years.
