Today we are discussing our blogs for Ch. 9.1. What did the progressives do to make the workplace safer?-The workplace was very dangerous before, and people worked long hours. Worker’s compensation started, and brought in laws to make the workplace safer. People put up guard rails, made the workplace brighter, and things like that. OSHA (1970) investigated businesses to make sure they were safe, and if they weren’t, they would close them down.3. What is prohibition? Why did people want prohibition to come about? What tactics were used to bring about prohibition?-Prohibition was when the sale and production of alcohol was banned in the country. Before, drinking was very common and there were laws that prohibited alcohol before the amendment. WCTU (Women’s Christian Temperance Woman) supported prohibition because women were being affected because they had to deal with drunken husbands (abusing, losing jobs, cheating, and crime). Country wide prohibition was the 18th Amendment, and it was passed in 1920. Progressives pushed for it.We will continue tomorrow with these questions. The rest of the class we could work on anything else for the class.
