Today in CWI, we started with presentations. It was Jessica, Bri, Erin and DJ's group. Bri told us again a summary of the Kyoto Protocol. Erin continued telling us about the IPCC report. It is the major group that deals with climate change. Bruns said that there will be another report in the next year or so. 52 scientists particiapted in the testing about climate change. Global Warming is an extrememly complex and important problem. DJ told us about the rest of teh IPCC report. She said that in order for us to actually understand global warming, we have to understand the cosmic rays from the sun and the pacific decadal oscillation.I learned that the temperature has only increased one degree and most people think that its like fifteen degrees. People are causing it. Jessica told us what we can do to help it. When you are washing clothes, she said to wash a lot of clothes together intsead of one at a time. Unplug things when you arent using them. Plant trees becasue they absorb CO2. Bike or walk instead drive. She told us what the government could do to help it. A big thing is the Kyoto Protocol. 183 countries have now agreed to this. They have issues a Clean Air Act which is when companies ahve to change the way they prooduce their products. Automobile dealers have had to change the way they make some their cars also. The United States and China are the two biggest producers of greenhouse gases. Obama met with them to try and change it. We are agreeing to work together to try and elimate the amount of greenhouse gases. There is a conference coming up to try and expand on the Kyoto Protocol.Jena, Dru and Haley started their presentation. They did it on over population. The defintion of over population is have a population in one place that is so dense that there are not enough resources for everyone. The four main causes of over population are - decline in death rate, increased birth rate, migration and lack of education. Less people are dying because of the medicine we have gotten to cure diseases. More people are being born because medication has helped with better conception. People move to other places where over population is taking place. Kids aren't learning enough about the harmful effects of over population. The effects of over population are natural resources get used upfaster tahn they can be replaced. It are lowering water levels (water we drink) by using more for electricity, etc. It is destryoing biological diversity which means we are changing the diversity of the world. It is polluting air, water, soil and food chain. It is depleting stratospheric O-Zone that shields us from UV rays. It causing heat waves, droughts, dying forests, accelerated species extintion, dying coral reefs, melting glaciers, rising sea leves, more and intense storms and rapid spread of disease.Haley told us about the solutions of over population. Education is the main one. Teaching kids about it will help. An alternative solution is limiting the babies per woman to be two - but that won't happen. Reducing the number of humans is really the ultimate way to stop it - but that is obviously out of the question. I learned where over population is taking place. Asia is the main place. China is over populated with 1,325,639,982 people. The US has 303,824,640 people. We gave feedback about their presentation. The other groups will do theirs tomorrow and Wednesday.
