~Cinco de Mayo~
We study the northeastern part of the US. Then we talk about the current events, one of them being about prayer. Then we watch a video about a man who took Nigerian girls and is going to sell them. Then we get back to talking about foreign affairs. Then we do a small assignment over the U.S. territories over the years, and I get the Philippines.
Philippine Notes: The United States gained control of the Philippines from Spain during the Spanish-American war.
In June 1898 Aguinaldo proclaimed the Republic of the Philippines and asked for U.S. support, but both the U.S. and Spain ignored this proclamation. By August Spanish forces in Manila had surrendered – to the U.S. In December 1898, the U.S. and Spain signed a treaty and Spain sold Guam, Puerto Rico and the Philippines to the U.S. As the U.S. announced its annexation, a skirmish erupted between U.S. and Filipino troops; the Philippine Republic declared war to defend its independence.
Notes:
- Different European countries were fighting over land in Africa. The United States saved China from the other European countries. Even many of the Asian countries were controlled by European countries. Majority of Latin America was controlled by Spain, and there was Brazil, that was controlled by Portugal.
- The Spanish-American war is a war that not a lot of people know about. Neither side won nor loss. Frances Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner during the war. It was 3 months long. We won the war, and was called a splendid war.
- World War I happened in 1914-1918. The losing colony lost the land and gave it to the winning colony. Germany was blamed for this war. Germany, Austro-Hungarian, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire were the top people of the war.
