Operation Barbarbosa was the greatest land war in recorded history. It began at 3:30 am on June 22, 1941. The initial German front was 995 miles long, and there was another 620 miles along the Finnish border. The main found would soon expand to 1490 miles and extend to a depth of over 600 miles. In to this great space of steppe, forest and swamp marched the best of the German Army, amounting to three quarters of its field strength.
Germany felt that there were three cities they had to capture in order to win the war. The main goal was Leningrad, then Moscow, and lastly Stalingrad. The Soviet Union was big trade partners with Germany until the attacks started happening. Ultimately, the Russians would win back and slowly push the Germans back towards Italy. Stalingrad was destroyed after the attack. Stalingrad was almost 90% taken over by German. The last 10% was strong enough to get rid of Germany and push them back and away. By spring of 1942, the Soviets were starting to turn the war around, slowly.
Erwin Rommell was a General. He was known as the Desert Fox for being so sly and sneaky. George Patton was the US general. Italy surrendered relatively quickly. Italy did not surrender completely until April of 1945. Tuskegee fought in all black units. They did a lot of bombing campaigns. Dwight Eisenhower was like third in charge. June 6, 1944 was the attack on D-Day. We invaded France on that day. It was supposed to be two days prier to June 6, but was delayed because of the weather. Omar Bradley was probably the next general under Patton.
During the Battle of the Bulge, it was very cold and snowy. Over a million men, 500,000 Germans, 600,000 Americans and 55,000 British had causalities. We kept pushing into Germany. Hitler ended up marrying his long time love, Eva Braun. The same day they got married, they both committed suicide. V-E Day was on May 8, 1945.
Japan did very well for themselves during the war. Japan invaded Manchuria to get resources. They invaded French Indo China. When that happened, we stopped trading with them. On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked the Philippines.
