African Front

Stalin wanted us to openly invade Europe to get the Germans out of Soviet Union but we went to North Africa instead. Stalin wasn't very happy. There was a lot of Vichy French troops in North Africa and they were on the Axis side. They slowly came over to the Allied powers, and Hitler was very mad about this.

Rommel- main Germany general, Montgomery- main British general, Patton Jr.- main U.S. general.

Rommel died from like a forced suiced and Patton died in a car crash, both deaths aren't really what you'd imagine with such great generals.

Tanks and planes became big in desert warfare, there wasn't really any place for them to hid though, but tanks could just go right through the flat land.

Italian Front

Italian front had more deaths and wounded by the infantry.

Continental Italy- Sep 3-9 Operation Baytown, Avalanche, and Slapstick happened. Sicily- largest island in Maditerranean sea, first place attacked. The Apinin Mountains created a struggle for the Allied powers, but they started invading in Sicily then moved all the way up. More people died in this then any other.

D-Day & European Front

D-Day was the alled invasion of Nazi Europe, largest amphibious military invasion in history. There was a lot of ground and naval forces. June 6th, 1944 D- Day (Operation Over Lord). GB, France, America, and Canada are the countries that invaded France's coast. It was a sucess because June 4-5 were stormy so Hitler let some of his troops leave. Allies had strong forces, and we led the Axis powers to believe that we were going to attack further north. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the overall supreme commander of the invasion forces. Marshal Bernard Montgomery was the commander of the fround forces on d- day. General Patton was in command of the "1st army group" which only was used to confuse the Axis powers.

Liberation of Paris, 19 August until the 25th, This battle marked the end of Operation Over Lord(D- day). The German general that was having control of France surrendered. After D-Day U.S. and other allied powers ended up pushing back German forces, fighting many battles and we usually won them. Germany was running out of resources and Hitler was basically going crazy and making bad choices.

Battle of the Bulge, happened in the Ardennes Mountains, over 19,000 Americans died. Battle of the Bulge called Operation Watch on the Rhine.

Decided that Soviets can move into Berlin which set the stage for the Cold War. Germany was split up to America, France, GB, and Soviet Union, Berlin was also split up between the four countries.

Pacific Front

Mainly between U.S. and Japan after the attacks on Britain Mylasia and Peral Harbor. Japan needed resources for their own war but U.S. wasn't giving them any, they looked for them in the many island nations in the Pacific. Japan attacked Hong Kong and the Phillipines also.MacArthur, US general, knew there was going to be an attack on the Phillipines but decided not to do anything. When the attack happened US troops were over whelmed and they were forced to leave. Midway unsuccessful for Japanese they were turned back. Considered the turning point of the war. Coral Sea was before Midway Japan didn't win but technically we didn't either but since Japan didn't win we did.

Last mjaor offensive of the war? Okinawa

Okinawa was key to communication for Japan.

Mediterranean Front

Malta is a very small island that Axis and Allied fought over a lot Allied won.

VE Day and VJ Day

VE stands for Victory in Europe day. Allied powers had power by then of the air.German Forces were just over.

VJ stands for Victory in Japan day.Allied foreces slowly made their way to Japan hoping islands and just taking over. Most of Japan's navy was sunk. End of war in Japan was on August 14, 1945 signed on US battleship Missouri, Tokyo Bay, fornally signed September 2.

US Homefront

Population- many people started to migrate and cities started to get very crowed, carpooling was big because of overcrowding on public transportation

Rationing- rationing system in place, rationed everything, tires first because they needed the rubber, then also food, and all other appliances. People started using food stamps (ration books) you had to go appear in front of a local rationing board. Every person in the house could have one no matter of the age. when buying gas must have gas card stamp and cash present. once food stamps were gone for the week that was it.

Women's Role- women took active roles in WWII, "Rosie the Riveter", women started going into the government more. Men saw that women could do man's work too. Women started being air piolts and gaining confidence in the work force.

Mr. Bruns' Powerpoint

US Homefront-

The draft, needing more men so they'd draft young men and train them in America.

George C. Marshall, Chief of Staff of the US Military during WWII

Women, Roise the Riveter, represented women workes in WWII. Nurses, typers, factory workers, farmers, waitresses, bus drivers. Every branch had different womens groups, Army- Womens Army corps, Navy- Waves, Air Force- Wasps. Iva Toguri, Japanese American in Japan. Forced to put out pro Japanese propaganda on the radio that was basically one of the only stations that US could pick up. She kind of made the Allied men's hopes go down.

Different races did play a role in the US military.

Henry Kaiser, pumped out ships fast, big part at home.

Hollywood in WWII, movies put out what was happening and tried to make the allies look good and axis bad. Bob Hope was a comidian in the war that would go entertain the troops to give them a break, singers and dancers would also go over.

War Production Board, kept telling people to go out and work more to keep up production.

War in Europe-

France had a strong above the water navy so they could block the German U-boats. There was French U-boat interception that they used to find where they were so that the boats could go around.

ULTRA(British) and MAGIC(US to Japan), code breaking technices.

Enigma machine, machine that Germany used to transmit code. They would type in something then something else would come out as something else and the German forces would know what it says.

Depth Charge, ship will force how far down they wanted that bomb to go off and it'd hit the sub.

Operation Barbarosa, attack from Germany to Soviet Union. Largest land war in history, some say Hitler's biggest mistake because now he was fighting a two sided war. German Wehrmacht(Army)- German Army in USSR was split. Hitler thought that if they got the three main cities (Leningrad, Stalingrad, and Moscow) then they'd win the war, they never got to Moscow. Leningrad was blockaded and people died of starvation, ate anything they could get. Germany got 90% of Stalingrad under controll.

British, Canadaian, and American troops were the biggest groups in the D-Day invasion. Hitler though the attack was going to be further north because of the fake information we put out there; he sent more troops there instead of were the attack really was.

Japanese-

Turning point battles were battle of Coral Sea and Midway.

Doolittle's raid- show it at the end of Pear Harbor, bombing Japan as soon as possible.

Coral Sea- Air and Naval battle, Japan didn't win so we claimed it as a win for America.

Midway- turning point, Japan lost a lot of ships.
