The Cold War: The Fall of Communism
Gorbechev
- became the leader in 1985.
- He tried to make more like a democracy.
- He couldnt fix economy without changing political and social structure of communist nation.
- He reforms because Russian economy not growing.
- Dependable and effective plan to grow economic and social progress.
- He created changes in governmental structure.
- Congress of People's Deputies - created by him, it was his way of election.
- Law of Cooperatives - private ownership of business
- 1987 - new law gave businesses full control, each enterprise can decide how much of their product they want to produce, have to do it all on their own.
The Ending
- Repeal of Article six of USSR Constitution, it had given communist party supremacy over all institutions in society.
- 1990 - Soviet Presidency
- Gorbechev out of power before new treaty was to be signed, Gennadiy Yanayev temporarily took over presidency.
- Gorbechev returend into General Secretary.
Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defence Initiative
- Was an organization created by president Reagan on March 23, 1983
- It used space based on ground based systems to protect the US
- The SDI was more focused on defensive strategy then the previous offensive doctrine M.A.D.
