Mr. Bruns went over some information about semester tests with us at the beginning of class. He told us when our scheduled times were and how the test will work. Then we went into the presentations on the Africa project. Trey and Makayla did their presentation first. The National Party was a governing party of South Africa. There were many laws of Apartheid such as no blacks were aloud. This conflict ended when banks and investment firms withdrew from South Africa. They pretty much were giving them a sign that they weren’t going to do business with them until their racist issues came to an end. Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918. He was named Rolihalah by his parents, this means trouble maker. Later on in life he got the name Nelson from one of his teachers and decided to keep it. He was wanted and living on the run. Mandela was arrested for many years. Next was the Rwanda Genocide presentation. In 1994 Rwanda’s population had 7 million people and included 3 different ethnic groups. The 3 different ethnic groups were called the Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa. Belgians thought that Tutsi’s were better that the Hutu because they had white features. Obviously the Hutu’s didn’t think this was fair at all. The Belgians gave cards to each person in Rwanda. Some of theses cards meant life or death depending on the card you got. In 1994 Rwanda’s president was killed I a plane crash. He was a Hutu. The Hutu’s blamed the Tutsi’s for this and a massacre broke out between both groups. Radio stations were broadcasting their opinions and going against the Tutsi’s which didn’t help the fight at all. The fight lasted about 100 days with thousands of people dying each day. 800,000 people died all together in this Genocide. The United States decided they didn’t want to take a big part in the genocide but they did try to help out.
