Today at the beginning of class we talked about semester tests. My testing time will be from 1:15 to 1:30. Then Trey and Makayla gave their presentation about South Africa.
South Africa:
South Africa faced racial discrimination from 1948 to 1994 and was goverened by the National Party. The Laws of Apartheid include no black and white marriages and the forced removal of black Africans and Asians.
Nelson Mandela:
Father was the chief of the Thembu clan. Mandela was taken by a friend of his dad and received excellent education. Went to college at Fort Beaufort, then later to Fort Hare University. Worked as a guard at a mine and a clerk at a law firm, and finished his law degree at the University of South Africa. Sentenced to five years in prison for speaking out against black African discrimination. In 1990 he was released from prison after 27 years and became the president of the African National Congress. In 1994 South Africans were allowed to vote for the first time.
Rwanda:
In 1994, in about 100 days, 800,000 people died. Rwanda has three different ethnic groups: Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa. Rwanda was once part of Belgium. The Belgians thought that the Tutsies were better because than the Hutus because they had more "white features" like a more medium and height, lighter skin, and thinner lips. The Belgians gave the Tutsies a better education and jobs. When the Belgians left, the Tutsies would discriminate the Hutus and thought that they were inferior even though the Hutus outnumbered them. In 1959 the Hutus launched an attack against the Tutsies and took over Rwanda. In 1994, the Rwandan president, a Hutu was flying in a plane which was shot down, killing him. The Hutus blamed the Tutsies for the attack and the whole country turned against eachother resulting in mass murders and slaughtering of people with machetes and clubs. The radio stations which was like Rwandan t.v. was broadcasting propaganda saying that mean things about the Tutsies and no matter whether you were a man, woman, or child, you were attacked. After 100 days of genocide more than 800,000 people were killed. Eventually the Rwanda Patriotic Front called a cease fire and the Hutus ended up fleeing to the Congo.
