Japan invaded Manchuria, China because they had a lot of natural resources, factories, and markets. They also could use Manchuria as a base to attack the rest of China. The good neighbor policy was the United States wanting to become better neighbors and friends with Latin America. The U.S. didn’t want the Latin countries to become good friends with the axis powers.

Hitler took small steps to get rid of the Jews. The Nuremburg Laws in 1935, made Jews second class citizens and took away their rights. If you had at least one Jewish grandparent you were considered a Jew. Another law was that Jews could only marry Jews. Hitler considered inferior, Jews, Gypsies, mentally/physically handicapped, slaves, communists/socialists, dark skinned people, mixed races, homosexuals, twins, and Jehovah’s Witnesses, Catholics. If you fought back against Hitler you would be targeted. The Aryan race means the group of people that speak an Indo-European. Hitler and Mussolini signed the Rome-Berlin Axis making them allies officially. Hitler unites Austria and Germany together. People weren’t happy but let him do it because some Austrians wanted it and Hitler was Austrian. The leader of Austria was threatened to death to join Germany. Czechoslovakia was next for Hitler to attack. A lot of German speaking people lived there. The Sudetenland/Munich Conference, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, and France. Hitler promised if he got the Sudetenland he wouldn’t attack anyone else or try to get anymore land, he was lying obviously. They gave into what Hitler wanted to prevent another huge war.

Italy invaded Ethiopia because Italy already had land next to Ethiopia. They wanted the land and resources. They had lost to Ethiopia in 1924 and it was an embarrassment to Italy.

The U.S. tried to stay neutral. If two countries were in a war, we would not trade with them because we don’t want to get brought into war. FDR said that the U.S. needed to help the peaceful countries and quarantine Germany and such countries. The Panay Incident was the first little step for Japan and the U.S. to go down hill. The Japanese attacked an American gunboat and two Americans died. Japan apologized for it and it ended peacefully.

Kristallnacht means the night of the broken glass. It was the night when Nazi’s went around broke Jews glass to their homes and stores, they burned down churches and started sending Jews to concentration camps.

Hitler and Stalin(Soviet Union) decide to sign a Non-Aggression Pact. They hated each other but they didn’t want to have to worry about each other, so this pact was so they wouldn’t have to fight. They agreed to trade with each other too. SU would give Germany oil, Germany would give SU weapons. They would invade Poland and split it.

The Blitzkrieg means lightning warfare. The concept of it was to achieve victory as soon as possible. Planes, tanks, and infantry. Its designed to take out communication and transportation. The planes made a loud shrieking noise as they came down to bomb the enemy. Poland surrendered pretty quickly.
