---Today Mr. Bruns started by telling us a little about the test that will be this week and then continued with the big PowerPoint.
---Italy was fascist right away when Mussilini came to power and they wanted to take countries and had strong militarism. Italy wanted to take over Africa and the Mediterranean Sea. After we invaded Italy the Italian government surrendered and they switched sides and eventually were freed for Germany.
---Japan was an island nation with little resources. Their navy was reduced and they outlawed war. They were in the League of Nations. When the Great Depression sets in the military takes over the government and they invade Manchuria and then the rest of China for resources. They leave the LoN. They also attack the United States at Pearl Harbor. Japan was able to take most of the Chinese coast but they couldn’t get the countryside.
---The United States was neutral with all our neutrality act to make sure we stay out of Europe’s issues and we wouldn’t trade with countries at war. We didn’t want to lose our ships while we weren’t at war. The Quarantine Speech basically said that Germany, Italy, Japan, and the Soviet Union were supposed to be quarantined off from the rest of the world. Japan attacked one of our gunboats in China but they apologized, this made our situation slowly go downhill with Japan.
--Hitler goes on his campaign to unite German speaking countries.
---We need to know that the Soviet Union drop out of WW1 with Germany and sign a different treaty. This says that they lose the war and they lose a lot of Land. They fight the Bolshevik revolution and this caused the Soviet Union to go to communism. This was led by Lenin.
The new government of Germany after WW1 was the Weimar Republic. Germany had never had a democracy and they had lost the war and on top of that Hitler was bagging on them and the Great Depression set in. Hitler associated it with Jews and Communists and he used it to rise to power. Hitler used propaganda to blind Germany. A lot of the Jewish and intellectual scientists left for the US and some stayed to sabotage the programs.
---Hitler was born in Austria in 1889 and he was pretty poor and they think he may have been part Jewish. He was a much abused child and he hated school and was a trouble maker. He tried to get into an art school and then he joined the German military. After WW1 he started to preach for the Nazi party and he talked about the democracy being responsible for the treaty. He goes to prison for trying to overthrow the government and writes his Mein Kampf.
