Today, Bruns started off the class by talking about semester test and all that jazz. We then started watching the video again. It started off with the part about the men who were caught by the Brasilian guys trying to protect the forest, as the men were poaching animals and all that. The next story talked about how an American nun was teaching people to use the forest conservatively, which in turn helped the environment. She reported people who logged illegally, and was eventually killed by two men hired by a rancher. The woman's death didn't allow the rancher to log illegally, but had the opposite effect. The story after that was about natives who were trying their best to stop loggers, but aren't very successful. The video moved on to a story about a boy in America. He lived in a good neighborhood, and his mother loved him very much. But one day, he was diagnosed with lukemia. The mother searched for answers, and was wondering about the smell of the neighborhood. The ship channel was being polluted by a refinery very near, but no clear connections have been made with the pollutants and the fact that kids are more than 50% more likely to get cancer than any other area. Species are disappearing at 1,000x the natural rate of extinction. That was the end of the video. We then moved on to Rwanda.
