In the movie that we have been watching for the past 3 class periods, we watched it again today, but I think it's almost over. They went and visited a tribe to see how they're being affected. They do patrols to look for poachers and people cutting down trees. They like then chase them out if they find any. 70% of the plants that fight cancer cells are in the forest, yet people continue to destroy the rain forest.Kids living within two miles of the ship channel are very at risk for luekemia. It is some of the things that they use at the plant that go in the air and so it causes leukemia. But the ship channels don't have to change anything though because it's not a law. They are attempting to make it a law, but it still might take a while. ):Next, we discussed our assigned Rwanda blog this week. The Tutsis and Hutus are the two groups there. They are so similar, but the reason they don’t like each other is because when Belgium took it over, they divided people by their ethnicity, and because the Tutsis were taller and skinnier, they were considered “better” than the Hutus. They got better jobs and education opportunities. This really upset the Hutus, who were the majority of the population, and in 1959 they murdered 20,000 Tutsis. In 1962, Belgium relinquished power to Rwanda and the Hutus came to power. Then we jump ahead to 1994. The president, who was a Hutus, had his plane shot down, and he and some of his advisors, and a president from another country were killed. They were meeting to discuss how to end the problems.Another reason the Hutus were upset and wanting to eliminate the Tutsis were because if they regained power, the Hutus were probably going to be enslaved. So when this president’s plane came down, that was the first day of the 100 day genocide. Over 800,000 people were killed in that time period.
