List the Major countries (including main explorers) that explored the New World and where they settled.
Portugal- The portuguese were the first European Explorers to explore the Unkown World.
Portugal wanted everything they wanted so they set out to explore.
This varies from precious stones such as gold or silver, spices, and to expand their empire.
The main Portuguese explorers were Prince Henry the Navigator.
The Portuguese discovered Brazil and they settled there and in part of South America.
Spain- Some of the Spanish explorers included Ferdinand Magellan, Hernando Cortez, Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, Hernando de Soto, Francisco Vasquez de Cornando.
Spain wanted many things, including a larger empire, spices, gold and silver and other precious stones, and they wanted to expand Christianity.
The main things Spain wanted was gold, silver, and other precious stones to pay for their war against Turkey.
Spain settled in what is now Mexico and part of South America. They defeated the Aztec to gain land in South America.
England- England was like Spain in many ways they both wanted the same thing.
The Spanish would attack England to get goods, they could do this because they had a more powerful navy, but when to two countries were attacking each other out at sea the English would try to steal the Spanish goods. These two countries were not allies but rivals.
The English Explorers include Sir Francis Drake and John Cabot.
The English settled in the East in North America and part of present day Canada.
France- The French wanted a larger empire, spices and riches, and they wanted to expand Christianity.
The French wanted animal furs, they were really big on that.
Some of the main French explorers include Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet.
I think all of the European Countries were exploring for the same thing. The Spanish appear to have to most naval power out of all of these countries. Most of these countries didn't get along. We should be glad they discovered the New World or we wouldn't be able to study anything!
