Philippines second attack

the natives to the country were enslaved by the japanese

they urged the US to retake the philippines

they invaded and pushed them back to manila where they laid siege

native militia helped to eliminate pockets of japanese , last in 1974

Midway

Yamamoto wanted to bring the Pacific Fleet to midway where they may have been able to destroy it

the US had broken Jap NAval code befroe and knew the Jap plan

Jap planes went from carriers to bomb the island

the attack was unsuccesful and the Jap were turned back

both forces went to regrpup

considered teh turning point of the war

Coral Sea

this battle was the first battle between aircraft carriers that never spotted one another

each side had nearly the same losses as the held nothing back in the attack

This was the first time that Japan had loss a major offensive in the war

It also prevented them from attacking Port Moresby

Saipan

bombardment began on June 13, 1944

Crews on the battleships were inexperienced and they had to attack from far out due to mines

the landing began two days later

JAp on the air were surprised but the navy launched a counterstrike

It was a disater for their navy and lost three air craft

Japs fought to the last man on a mountain

they hid in the volcanic caves and were eventually poushed out

The Japs got all of their men together and lauched a last bonzai charge

it was considered the most costly battle of the war with 3 thousand killed and ten thousend wounded

Guadalcanal

were near supply lines

there was a key airfeild on the island

the Us took the field early

Japan launched several counteroffensives

Iwo Jima

Japanese airfields on Iwo Jima had been attacking bombing missions

the US marines were cahrged with taking the island

Their first goals was to take Mount Suribachi

The took it and had the first and second flag raising

The JAps were still in their fortified postitions in the mountains

they were slowly pushed out of their tunnels

On March 25, 1945 the Japs launched their final attack

THis is the most costly operation in the history of the US marine corp

Okinawa

Okinawa was key to communication lines for Japan

The attack was to have 40 aircraft carriers and 18 battleships

there was to be 1300 ships and 180000 troops in the invasion

Bombers nearly destroyed the capital city but it did little good

Tetsu no bow

the storm of steel

Japs troops were entrenched in the mountains

they sent their biggest warship to help but we sunk it

we attacked the line and got them to retreat

Japs last major naval attack in the war

Atomic Bomb

two atomic bombs were dropped on hiroshima and nagasaki

they destroyed nearlly all of the buildings within a mile

killed 90% of people within a half mile

Radiation sickness killed more people until it started to slow 8 weeks later
