Berlin war-
- Blockaded the city. wouldn't let anything in to their city. food and supplies.

McCarthyism- Attacking people with no proof.
- Scared communism was going to take over our country.

- He had hearings to see if people was a communist.
- He died of alcohol abuse

Bay of pigs invasion-
- Started by President Eisenhower.
- This invasion fails.
- We traded baby food to get people back
- Cuba Became Communist
- Hurt President Kennedy because it was an embarrassment since we stared this.
Cuban Missile Crisis-
- 13 days
- Cuba thinks we are a threat so they use Soviet Unions missiles
- We found out they had IRBM which meant they could reach the outer part of the United States
- Kennedy was going to air strike them to take out the missilies
- We were then going to invade them
- Compromise was that we will never invade Cuba and they would take back there missilies
- We would then take out our missiles from Turkey after 6 months
- Very close to war with Soviet Union
Berlin Wall (going up and coming down)
- Soviets build a wall in 1961
- Soviets didn't want to build the wall because they didn't want people to not want like communist so they had to make sure they didn't leave
- People wanted to live on the free side
- True symbol of Cold War
- People would get shot down if they tried escapaing
- Piece of land in between them where people would see the people that tried to flee
- You went through Checkpoint Charlie if you wanted to get passed the two
- Fell in 1989
- People started walking through and they would pick the wall apart
- Communism fell apart
- Soviet Union fell apart and countries broke out of the Soviet Union
Korean War-
- North started this by invading the South
- Back and forth war
- The forgotten war
- 1950-1953 (Korean Conflict)
- Happened between WW2 and Vietnam
- Annoying little brother to China
- 1910-1945 Korea was controlled by Japan
- After WW2, Korea split into two, North and South.. Soviet Union had a lot of control of North, US had South
- Election was held to eventually unify the country
- Soviet Union didn't think it was fair so they gave power of the North to Kim IL-Sung
- The South elected the nationalist exile Syngman Rhee
- North invades the South because the US left the South because we were no longer concerned about them
- No one really won
Vietnam war-
- 1950- 1975
- Goals of this war we wanted to stop communism from spreading
- Goal for Communist was to have independence
The french connection-
- French had gained control of Indochina in a series of colonial wars beginning in the 1840's and lasting until the 1880's.
- Vietnam was under Japanese control during WWll. Although the Vichy French continued to serve as the official administrators.
- After the Japanese surrender, the French fought to retain control of their former colony against the Viet Minh independence movement, led by Communist party leader Ho Chi Minh.
