Today I presented the last three questions for Japan and then Zach and Ben presented on the Soviet Union.

1. How did the Treaty of Versailles impact them?

The Soviet Union was really effected by the Treaty of Versailles. The Brestli-Tatsla act let the Soviet Union out of World War 1.


2. What type(s) of government did this country have in the interwar years(1919-1938)?

In 1917 Vladimir Lenin started a single-party dictatorship under the Bolsheviks, Soviet Union became a member of the League of Nations in 1935. They weren't allowed to be apart before 1935 because they were communist.


3. How did their leader, that led them throughout WWII, come to power?

When Lenin died in 1934, Stalin rose to power.


4. How did this leader change their country(for the better and worse) prior to WWII?

He signed the Non-Aggression Pact with Hitler so that Germany would not invade them and he could build up his military.


5. What were the goals of the leader?

He wanted to regain the land that Russia lost in World War I. He wanted to modernize the economy, build strong military, spread ideas of communism, increase food supply, increase raw material production. He had a five year plan which would increase the things that were being produced.


6. What was the military strategy of this country in the inter-war years(1919-1938)?

Stalin wanted to secure the borders, so that they would be safe from attacks. If they secured the borders they would feel safe. They wanted to get back all land that they lost after World War 1. The Soviet Union also wanted to make a deal with Germany.


7. What role did they play in WWII?

It was at war with Germany and the Axis Powers. He signed the Non-Agrression Pact with Germany. Over 90,000 troops at Stalingrad surreneded to the Soviet Union, which was a huge turning point in the war. When the Soviet Union pushed through Berlin on April 30, 1945 Hitler committed suicide. They ended the war when they captured Berlin on May 2, 1945.


8. Who were their allies in WWII?

There main allies were Great Britain, United States, and France.


9. How did WWII impact/effect the country?

They lost over 20 million people and many of them were civilians. They expanded their borders because they defeated Germany, Finland, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Romania
