Today we had a blog discussion day. The topic for blogs this week are about Black History Month. On Thursday, December 1, 1955, around 6 pm Rosa Parks was riding the Cleveland Avenue Bus trying to get back home. She was sitting at the beginning of the colored section of the bus, but the white section was filled and she was asked to move. She didn't move and this started her actions started a bus boycott. The boycott laste 381 days damaging the public transit's finance and led to the lifitng of the segregration law.

Black History Month is a rememberance of black people that made a difference in the world during a time of racism and religious hatred. It was started in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. At first Black History Month was called "Negro History Week" when it was first started. The Watts Riots started on August 11, 1965. A black man was drving while intoxicated and an officer pulled him over. The cop was treating the man badly and many people started yelling at the cop and throwing things. They rioters started to start fires so the government sent National Guardmens to try and calm them down. 3000 people were arrested following the riots.

Plessy v. Ferguson was a court case that ruled that blacks and whites could be segregated as long as they were getting the same treatment. It said "seperate but equal" however more times than not they were not given the same treatment. It allowed racial segregation for more than 60 years. Mathew Henson was with the group that made the first trip to the North Pole.
