FBI- Headquartered in Washington D.C., Motto: Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity. Director- James Comey. Budget- $8.3 billion. Apart of United States Department of Justice. Started on July 26, 1908. Was founded by special agents (Theodore Roosevelt). John Hoover was the first director of the FBI. 1935 when the name was changed to Federal Bureau of Investigation. Responsibilities- Protect U.S. from terrorists. Protect US from foreign intelligence operations and espionage. Protect US against cyber-based attacks. Combat public corruption at all levels, Protect civil rights- Human trafficking; moving people, making people do things based on race. Powers- Combat national criminal organizations; break up gangs. Combat significant violent crimes- kidnapping, murder.. Controversies: Hitler controversy, Hitler escaped the Allied forces. Hid in the Andes mountains in Argentina that was heavily guarded. Many other Nazi's joined him, then he died around age 95 in Brazil. The United States heard about this but never acted on it. J. Edgar Hoover Mafia- Threats to his family; murder him and his loved ones.
Secret Service- Facts- Headquarted 3 blocks from the White House. Has around 120 field offices in all 50 states. Dozen offices in foreign countries as well. 1,300 uniformed officers. 2,100 special agents, 1,700 more for support. A little over 5,000 total workers. Guys in the Uniformed Division- provide protection for the White House and other buildings in Washington. Special Agents- assigned to field operate for a few years before they qualify for personal protection. Only one agent has ever died while protecting the president. Secret service has never had a traitor or spy in its rank. FBI started as part of the Secret Service. USSS was formed, its job was to counterfeit money. Part of the Treasury Department, then when the DOHS was created, the Secret service was moved to the DOHS. History- President Lincoln authorized on April 15, 1865, the day of Lincoln's death. First chief was William P. Wood. 1950- Leslie became the first agent to die while protecting the president. In 2003, the SS moved to a division on the DHS. Powers/Responsibilites- Main priority: stop counterfeiting. Second responsibility is to stop financial crimes. The first one is to protect the president. Controversies- In 2009-2010 Joe Biden's motorcade was involved in series of accidents. Agents got in trouble for having "Animal House" type parties throughout the night. Agents were fired of being accused of bring with prostitutes and drinking all night while they were supposed to be preparing for Obama's visit.
