Today we talked about our next project which is over the 1920's through the 1930's. It is over Chapters 12-14. My group has the Causes of the Great Depression. Then we started to talk about Chapter 10. The questions are...Roosevelt Corollary and Monroe DoctrineI learned that the Monroe Doctrine was a foreign policy of the United States that stated that countries from Europe could not come in and colonization in the western hemisphere. Also, the United States would not interfere with European colonies. In other words it said that the Americas no longer were open to European colonization. I also learned that if Europeans did come in and make colonies it would be taken as a threat. It also said to the Europeans that the Americas were for Americans. Another thing that I learned was that the the Roosevelt Corollary was an amendment to the Monroe Doctrine in 1904 by Roosevelt. This stated that the United States would now use force to protect its economic interests in Latin America.Big Stick Diplomacy--"Speak softly and carry a big stick"I learned that the Big Stick Diplomacy was the idea of negotiating peacefully, which is the speak softly part. If speaking softly would not work we would threaten with a ‘big stick’. The big stick was a strong military. I also learned that this stated that the United States would now use force to protect its economic interests in Latin America.
