US Control of Puerto Rico- After Spanish American War military controled it for a while then the Foraker Act got rid of military rule and made it in controled by the people there and the President of the U.S. Puerto Rico today is still ours, it's a common wealth today. This means that people there are US citizens, they can move freely across states, pay taxes, be in militay, Miss America contest, protected by US laws, can't vote for president. Like to have benifits with US so they don't want to be independent, but don't want to be a state and loose their hispanic past.US Control of Cuba- Teller admendment insured freedom for Cuba if we won the spanish american war, which we did. After the war we got control of Cuba. Cuba didn't like it that we were still there after the war because they wanted to be free. We helped build schools, roads, drained swamps to decrease malaria but they still wanted us out. The Platt Admendment said that Cuba couldn't make treaties with other countries, US could interve with Cuba when we felt we needed to, Cuba couldn't go into debt by barrowing money from other countries, Cuba had to lease or sell us land for a Naval base. Best way to describe this situation was that we gave them freedom with strings attached. We were interested in Cuba for naval bases, sugar cane, use as a base to build a canal in centeral america.Open Door Policy in China- US wanted to get into China so any country that already trade with China would have free trade with them. Other countries liked it but didn't officially sign it because they didn't want to give up a lot of their control over the bigger cities in China that are on the coast. John Hay was the one that proposed this idea and this may have saved China from getting taken over at some point.-Breann Lehr
