Today we did our blog discussion.. Urbanization started in the 1900's in midwest regions. I learned about some of the challenges of urbanization. The major issues included fire, flood, and sanitization problems. Next I learned about the Chicago Fire, it was a fire that burned for 24 hours and left very many people homeless. The fire departments back in that time were not very good. The next topic that I learned about was on the voting restrictions. You had to pass a literacy test, but African Americans were usually given a test in a different. I learned more about the Grandfather Clause and poll tax. I learned that all of these things were placed into a set of laws called the Jim Crow Laws.Another blog topic that I learned about was Ellis Island. Ships would bring in immigrants, and they had to pass a physical test for diseases. Next I learned that they went to a government official and had to answer questions. I also learned that only about 2% of immmigrants had to be sent back. Tuberculosis was one of the main reasons had to go back. Another thing I learned was that women had to be escorted with a man to be able to come into the country. Names were often mispelled and changed.
