Today we finished up the presentations.8-4The American leisure approached the middle class people from all over. The country fought off congestion. In the 1900's more people joined school because they wanted to learn the culture and then build more schools. William R. Hearst was very selfish. He wrote exaggerated tales for the news paper in 1895 he owned the New York Journal.Coney Island was 9 miles from the Manhattan shores. This was an amusement park where people would go to just get away. In 1885 coca-cola was created by John Pemderton. It was made to cure head aches. It was originally alcohol. It was then remade with no alcohol.Between 1865-1895 a law was passed that you had to attend school for 12-16 weeks. They had strict rules and punishments. In 1880 200 kids attended kindergarten. In 1900 3,000 kids attended kindergarten. In 1880 about 62% were white and 34% were African Americans. In 1900 more then 1/2 million students attended high school. The males would graduate with knowing drafting, carpentry, and mechanics. The females would graduate with knowing office work. In 1871 7.6 million attended.8-2Racial discrimination was mostly to African Americans. In 1890 less then 1% of blacks attended high school. The education for immigrants was a lot of the children that would be sent to free American schools. In 1992 almost 120,000 children were refugees. In 1900, 20 million immigrants would come to the U.S. Between 1880 and 1920 college enrollments quadrupled. The colleges' research would include Modern Lang, Phys. Science and they had new disciplines. Between 1800 and 1910 industrial development changed the policies.Booker T. Washington believed that African Americans would end racism. In 1895 W.E.B DU Bois was the first African American to get his Doctorate from Harvard. In 1905 the Niagara Movement was founded. This was for the blacks so they could get a higher education.I think that the school houses back then would have been really bad because there was no sanitation. If it was still that way it would be bad because we have so many people in school, there wouldn't be enough room.
