Today was blog discussion day. I learned about Angel Island. It is an island in the San Francisco Bay, California. It was called the "Ellis Isand of the West" because it was where Asian Immigrants would come into the country. I learned that compared to Ellis Island, Angel Island was very harsh and they faced hard questioning and a long detention period. I learned that the Chinese would write poems on the wall of the holding building about their struggle through the harsh detention period. The Chinese Exclusion Act made it so that Chinese could not come into the country for ten years. I learned that a much higher percentage of Asians were sent back compared to the immigrants at Ellis Island, more than likely because of racism.Next I learned more about the San Francisco Fire. I learned that the earthquake struck the Northern Coast of California on April 18, 1906. I also learned that after the earthquake there were numerous camps that were set up that charged $2 to live in them for a month. The homes were painted a olive green color because the U.S. Government had a lot of excess green paint. I also learned about Jane Addams who came up with the idea of the Hull House, which gave a home to poor people that could not afford a house.
