Korean Conflict/The Forgotten War

  • Korea was invaded and ruled by Japan from 1910 until 1945
  • After WWII Korea was split into two- North(USSR) and South(US) at the 38th parallel
  • an election was going to be held to eventually unify Korea
  • We pulled most of our soldiers out of Korea
  • North Korea wanted permission to invade South Korea from Stalin and Mao ze Dong and got it 
  • Pusan Perimeter
  • United Nations helps the South out 
    • Police Action
      • the Security Council voted to send troops to help South Korea
      • US, Great Britain, France, China, and the Soviet Union that could veto the police action
      • Why didn't the USSR and/or China veto this proposal?
        • Taiwan
        • Soviet Union boycotted
  • UN Forces
    • US, South Korea, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, 
  • Communist
    • China, Soviet Union, North Korea
  • MacArthur was removed from command by President Truman 
    • he was being too aggressive & going against orders
  • Last 2 years were fought along the border
    • cease-fire established near the 38th parallel
  • DMZ was established (most heavily defended border in the world)
  • treaty was never signed
  • Results
    • first armed confrontation of the Cold War and set a model for many later conflicts
    • Created the idea of ta limited war, where the two super powers would fight without using nuclear weapons
    • Expanded the Cold War 
    • North was bombed a lot and had a lot of damage
