Remembering 9-11: Four commercial airlines were hijacked. The first was crashed into the North tower of the World Trade Center, the second to the South. Eventually, both towers collapsed. (South first, North after) Another plane crashed into the Pentagon, the western side engulfed in flames. Everyone on board the plane was killed, 125 people inside the building were killed. The plane that was to hit the White House was taken back over by the civilians on board, who had figured out what was going on, and had crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Rescues were still taking place a week later. The clean up was not fully completed until May of 2002. This was the biggest attack on the US sense Pearl Harbor. al-Queda means "the base." It is a stateless terrorist organization. Ayman al-Zawahiri took over as leader when Osama bin Laden was assassinated. Operation Desert storm: The Us feared that they might attack Saudi Arabia. We established military bases there. (With their permission) This provoked the 9-11 attack. SPORTING events were postponed. National parks and landmarks closed. Late night comedians took some time off. Movies, TV shows, video games were delayed and change or cancelled. Airports closed for a few day and became much more secure leading to longer waiting times. The Department of Homeland Security was up. The Patriot Act was passed. Led to waterboarding by the CIA at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. War in Afghanistan- October, 2001. Patriotism increased.
Why we won:
We had close ties with our allies and the USSR didn't. China started siding with us after 1972. The Soviet economy was in shambles whereas the us was flourishing. Huge deficit. High inflation. Corruption. Social problems. Shortage of basic needs. Arms reduction talks. Soviet mistakes. Invasion of Afghanistan. Ignoring social concerns. Spent everything on military. New countries broke out of the USSR Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, kazakhstan, Uzbekisyan, turkmenistan, tajikistan, kyrgystan, georgia, amenia and Azerbaijan. East and west Germany re-unified in 1990. Rise of democracy and capitalism throughout Europe. Wars and Ethnic cleansings- Yugoslavia (Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia. Bush Doctrine: U.S.A had the right to secure itself against countries that harbor or give aid to terrorist groups. United states should depose foreign governments that represented a potential threat to the security of the United States.
Watergate: "The Scandal" Richard MIlhouse Nixon was 37th president and only president to resign, was involved with the water gate.
What it was: In May 1972 Nixon's reelection committee broke into Democratic headquarters and stole top secret documents to cover up. Burglars were caught the second attempt. Nixon tried paying people off. 5 pleaded guilty and the other two convicted in January 1973. The story: When the pentagon papers were released to the public Nixon was loosing his popularity. Nixon knew in order to win the election this needed to be done. 5 men were caught June 17, 1972. Nixon had now to face either he resign from president or get impeached, eventually Nixon resign on the night of August 8, 1974. Vice president Gerald Ford was sworn in the next day. Spiro Agnew was the first vice president under Nixon.

Why did bin Laden turn his attention to attacking the US? In November 2002, bin Laden wrote his "Letter to America" supported the Jewish aggression against Muslims in Lebanon. The presence of U.S. troops in the Saudi Arabia due to Iraq invading Kuwait. U.S supported of Israel economic sanctions against Iraq.
Why did these people want to attack America? According to Bin Laden, he has never said that the attacks were, are, or will be because of American freedoms, the rights of our citizens, or even because of our religious differences. He has said that the reasons for the attacks of the past as well as those of the future will because of the way the US and its allies treat the Muslim world.
USA in Somalia: Dec. 4, 1992 George H.W Bush sends 28,000 Americans troops to Somalia. Bush wanted to help the Somalia people since all attempts to send food to them were intercepted by war lords. Us sends missiles against qaeda training camps in Sudan and afghanistan- to little effect. USS Cole attack oct. 2000. Yemen, al qaeda sent a suicide bomber aboard a small ship near the USS Cole and detonated its bomb, blowing a large hole. Khalid Sheikh- mastermind of 9/11. The problems were suicide bombers, IED, Drug Trade Flourishes, Famine, never known democracy, Extreme Islamic, Mountains and Terrain, Border crossing, Untrained Afghan troops, legitimate governments, civilian casualties.
Successful or Unsuccessful? New democratic Government in Afghanistan, unstable however. Taliban no longer in control, yet have re-emerged in SE Afghanistan and now parts of Pakistan. Girls now attend school again since our invasion. Iraq/ Afghanistan wars another Vietnam. Long dragged out conflicts with no end in sight. Couldn't tell who's a friend or foe. Not popular at home. Not popular with other governments or their people.

Friday 8th:
Iraq: A monarchy was established in 1921. Iraq gained independence from Britain in 1932. In 1958, the monarchy was overthrown and the republic of Iraq. Series of military and gas attacks against the Kurdish civilian population of rural Northern Iraq conducted between 1986 and 1989. A new constitution was then approved by vote and a new government of Iraq was elected in August 2010, the US became the last member of the coalition to cease combat operations in Iraq in December 2011, the last US troops left the country. US military advisers sent back in late 2014 to assist Iraq against ISIS.
