Vietnam

  • Beginnings
    • Geneva Conference
      • Vietnam was partitioned temporarily into North and South
      • set up to unify the country by July, 1956
      • such elections never held 
      • neither side wanted to lose
  • Escalation
    • started with the deployment of military advisers to South Vietnamese army
    • then started using special forces for commando-style operations
      • Green Berets
    • then regular troops were sent for defensive purposes only
    • in 1964, regular troops were used for offensive combat
    • once U.S. troops were in active combat, escalation shifted to the adding of more and more U.S. troops
  • Gulf of Tonkin
    • body of water
    • North Vietnamese attacked U.S. ships
    • Congress gave the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution 
    • President Johnson got the ability to wage war
  • Tet Offensive
    • President Johnson and General William Westmoreland kept saying that with more troops we will win the war

    • American public faith was shattered on January 30, 1968 when enemy supposedly on the verge of collapse attacked every major city in South Vietnam
    • named after lunar new year festival which is most important Vietnamese holiday in South Vietnam
    • crushed the enemy militarily, the surprising huge offensive attack from an enemy supposedly defeated convinced many Americans that victory was impossible
