Vietnam

  1. Beginnings
    1. France wanted to keep control of Vietnam
    2. Vietnam wanted independence (defeated France, still weren't independent)
    3. Geneva Conference - 
      1. Ho Chi Minh (our enemy)
      2. Split in two 
      3. elections were set up to unify the country - they were never held b/c neither side wanted to lose
  2. Escalation
    1. we slowly got involved 
    2. started with military advisors to the South Vietnamese army
    3. sent green berets/special forces -  more troops for defensive purposes
    4. 1964 : started sending more troops for offensive combat
    5. more and more troops
  3. Gulf of Tonkin
    1. US ships were attacked by the North Vietnamese
    2. congress gave President Johnson power to wage war
  4. Tet Offensive (early 1968)
    1. Tet was a lunar holiday (day of relaxation)
    2. American people were being told the war is close to ending - we will win with more troops
    3. easily won
    4. our enemy attacked around 20 cities 
  5. Anti-War
    1. Tet offensive
    2. Pentagon Papers
      1. someone leaked information to the papers the the US government was lying about the war
    3. Injuring/Killing innocent people (My Lai Massacre)
    4. Supporting a bad government in the South
    5. The power of the press
    6. Kent St. University
      1. happened b/c the war expanded into two more countries
    7. People tried to get out of serving
      1. Went to Canada or Sweden
      2. Went to college (student deferment)
      3. Got married (marriage deferment)
      4. Medically unfit for service
      5. Joined the National Gaurd or peace corps
      6. Claimed to be homosexual
      7. Being rich
  6. Vietnamization and De-escalation
    1. slowly got out of the war and let the Vietnamese fight on their own
    2. "Peace with Honor"
  7. Paris Peace Accords
    1. fighting stopped 
    2. US would pull out
    3. North and South would recognize each other's independence
