the berlin wall went up between wesst and east berlin
in 1989 they started to tear down the berlin wall
the wall was built to prevent people from moving from east to west berlin because so many people were moving. wall went up in 1961 and it was completely down by 1990.
nixons visit to china
after wwii.. americas and soviet unions relationship deteriorated. soviet union went after countries on the edge of communism.. like china. anerica felt communism would destroy the world... nixon was the first to visit china. nixon arrived in china in 1972 he met with mao.. my fingers hurt really bad. secretary of state waws excluded from the meeting. viewed foreign policies.. us intended to pull forces outta taiwan.. both nations pledged to work toward the full normalization of diplomatic reasons. the republic of china was the government in taiwan.. rest of china was communist. america left republic of china and went off to prc.

detente .. period of relaxion ... means release of tension
hoped tjat tjis would build new relationships between countries
china wanted this because they were afraid of what the us did to vietnam.. the pile of weapons tuat they had were alot smaller that the united states.. they were worried about makinf the relationship between the ussr and china any worse
ussr living conditiions were poor because of the spending tons of money on weapons at the expense of basic household goods.. ther were aware of decresing relationship with china.. knew that usa was trying to improve their relationship with china..
usa realized that they were better ways to contain communism than what had been done previously.. was aware of how expensive the cost of weapon production and keeping huge armed forces was. peaceful relationships with ussr would be beneficial.
salt I.... supposed to stop the number of ballistic missle launchers. provided for new sub-launched ballistic missile launchers.. basically salt one was all about us and ussr trying to eliminate nuclear weapons.
salt II ,, , replaced short term agreement with long term comprehensive treaty.. took things a step further than salt I.. didnt pass. we pulled out after ussr invaded afghanistan.
