Bay of Pigs Invasion

tis was in unsuccessful attempt by CIA trained force exiled Cubans to overthrow Fidel Castro.

In April of 1960, the US CIA began to recruit anti-Castro Cuban exiles

this recruiting happened until July of 1960

Upseppa Island was where the training of these anti-castro crban's was taking place

Specialist training took place at Fort Gulick in Panama and at fort Clayton in Panama

Ifantry training tyook place in a CIA ran bas known as JMTrax

the exiles called themselves- brigade 2506

in the summer of 1960, an airfield was constructed to help in fighting

The CAI used Douglas C-54 transports to take the anticastro cubans to cuba at night to cuba from base located in Florida

the cuban security apparatus knew that an invasion was coming becaue of thier secdret intelligance network but didn't knowwhere it was going to happen because they didn't want castro to get mad at them for not knowing where it is

On March 11, 1961, former CAstro ally American William Alexander Morgan was executed

On April 3, 1961 a bomb attack on militia barracks in LBayomo killed foru men and injured eight more

on the night of April 16/17, the pay of Pigs invasion began

thi envasion lasterd about three almost four days and 17 men were killed in action

The invasion didn't work.

House Committee on Unamerican Activities(HUAC)

Created in 1938 to investigate alleged disloyalty

teh chairman of the committee was Marten Dies

would question private citizens, publec emplyees, and other organizations suspected of having Communist ties

HUAC oftedn pressued witneses to surrender names

HUAC's activities commanded broad popular support

HUAC's questioning style and examination techniques were later used by Senation Joseph McCarthy

Investigation of Hollywood

the HUAc thought the threat of communests inthe film industry was a serious one

in 1947 began invesigation the Hollywood Motion Picture Industtry

Investigated whether Commnists were plantign propaganda in US films

In September of 1967, the HUAC inter viewed 41 people who were workiong in Hollywood

they named people who they accused of Holding leftwing views

a lot of peopel wer afraid to go to prison so they accused other people of being communist

the most famous fgroup of blacklisted individuals was known as the Hollywood ten

They din;t answer any questions, citing the first amendment

they were failed by the government and blacklisted by Hollywood

over 300 other Hollywood writers, actors, directors, etc. were blacklisted

writers continued to work by using pseudonyms

However actors could not change their faces,m so the could not work

the work of the committtee continued to decleine in importance throughout the late 1950's

in 1959 former president Harry S. Truman sied it was the "most un-american thing in the country today"

the committee was renamed the House Internal

Senator Joe McCarthy and McCarthyism

drooped out of school at 14 to help family
