Womens US History-
1700s: Revolutionary War- Women's brains were smaller than men. Women were inferior
19th Century- Women couldn't vote, Legal status of minor, Couldn't start divorce, Couldn't make wills, sign a contract without husbands permission.
Cult of Domesticity- Piety: Believed women were the religious ones in the family, Purity: Without sexual purity, Domesticity: Women's place is in the home, Cleaning, taking care of kids, Submissiveness: Passive bystander, Men were suppose to be religious, pure. Men never suppose to be submissive.
Seneca Falls Declaration- Abolition of Slavery, Temperance, Women's suffrage, Child Labor laws
Susan B. Anthony & Elizabeth Cady Stanton- Mad that black males were given the right to vote.
World War 1- Interrupted campaign for women's suffrage. Women took men's jobs to show the country they could do hard work.
Jeannette Rankin- First women elected in congress in 1916. Voted against war. Worked to win suffrage in Washington State.
Alice Paul- Head of National Women's Party. Pushed for Equal Rights Amendment.
Equal Rights Amendment(ERA)- Made all forms of discrimination based on sex illegal. 35 our of required 38 had ratified. Never ratified.
Roaring 20's- Flapper Girls-Going to college more, Working more outside than home.
Margaret Sanger- Founded American Birth Control League. Women were able to control their own bodies.
Education- 1928: Women were earning 39% of college degrees. Risen from 19% at beginning of century.
1928 Olympics- First time women were allowed in Olympics.
"Pink Collared" Jobs- Gave women a taste of the real world. Jobs: Secretaries, Teachers, Telephone Operators, Nurses, Waitress
